New website bugs - UPDATE 1

By Hendonboy (legacy user)20/1/2015 21:26Tue Jan 20 21:26:50 2015

Update
-------
A few changes have gone in this evening. To summarise:
- The menu should be improved and no longer go onto multiple lines when collapsed on different screen sizes (this should look better and ensure Jeff's issue doesn't crop up again)
- Swapped the order of the charter standard/sponsorship stuff & added an additional heading.
- Reduced the frequency of image sliding on the front page (from 6 > 10 seconds)
- Fixed the name of the Table and Appearance archive links on the main archive page.
- Made some backend fixes to help reduce the frequency of errors (more coming soon).
- Made a few tweaks to the spacing of content on the front page.

Simon... I've got a hunch your issue on Chrome might be because one of the files storing layout information may be cached by your browser, but in anycase even if it's still not loading properly then it should at least make more logical sense.

Paul B - likewise! I need to get some more photos when I can and find some time to work through my backlog to see what else I've got that might be suitable.

Thanks all, keep the feedback coming, both good and bad!

Original post

As you'll have no doubt noticed, I put a new design live for the website this evening. It's a bit rough and ready in places and still built on the old creaking code that has been crashing every so often of late (I'll be looking at that next!), but hopefully it's an improvement on what's gone before!

I need your help now though. I've only got a limited amount of technology to test with and there's a lot that's gone live this evening in my bulk change, so there's no doubt bugs and errors I'm not aware of. Please post below to let me know about anything that looks like it's missing or wrong, that you can't find or just looks strange. Even if it seems so obvious to you that you think I must know about it, I probably don't!

Thanks in advance :)

When I punch in hendonfc.net I keep getting Apache Tomcat errors, then when I refresh, the site comes up. I'm using Chrome, it may be that it's trying to load an archived old version, but just thought I'd point it out anyway.

Yeah, I'm gradually working through the cause of those - they've been a problem for a while. Basically if you get one then just hit refresh for the next few days until I've been through and sorted the rest of the backend code.

Our sponsors

The "Our sponsors" heading appears immediately above the FA Charter Standard Adult Club logo instead of immediately above the logos of our sponsors.

Also, there are three sponsors shown there but it would be easier to see them if there was a little gap between each of them.

Viewed on a mobile I'm guessing? Good spot... Hadn't thought about how that would look when collapsed.

I am delighted with the new look. It's the face of the next chapter in Hendons illustrious history and fits what is happening around the club at the moment. There may be a view issues to overcome but thank you for all the hard work and effort without compromise to the excellent information which has always been provided.

I can't see a way into this forum from the new website. I was only able to get here as I had this page saved as a bookmark.

Other > Messageboard should sort you out. It's the same place in the hierarchy it was, but is hidden initially as the links are collapsed.

Thinking about it, I'll probably change the name to "Forum" rather than Messsageboard as it's a more common name for it these days

Then there's a bug... only the twitter bird symbol should take you there! Do you know what browser and/or device you're using by any chance? It might help me pin down what's not working.

The twitter bird symbol and the messageboard link appear to do the same thing. I'm using an I pad / safari.

The word "Messageboard" doesn't appear clearly either, the last few letters are corrupted. Just a thought, but as no one else is joining in this discussion it could be that others are struggling to get here. If anyone is reading this can they confirm how they were able to access it.

Good stuff. I've tweaked a few things to make it work better on tablets - not 100% the way I want it to look, but should be better now.

Well done - keep up the good work. As it is my home page, I got rather a shock when opening up Safari late yesterday thinking what's this! Visually, it is immediately striking.

Just been looking at new website for first time, Phil, as have been away. The one thing that stands out to me is that when you go to the website there are 3 "promo"s that can cycle through but none of them obviously shows that this is the Hendon FC website - I personally think you need a banner headline at the top stating that this is the Hendon FC website.

Yes, I've had an email to the same note - something that had completely passed me by in seeing it daily for the last 8 months or so. It's so bleeding obvious once pointed out, too!

Messageboard log in

It appears that I cannot send or preview a message without logging in – even though I am logged in at the time! This has happened a few times so I have to copy the text of the message, send it, go through log in, return to previous page and it appears to go. (This is why Derby County was missed out from the list of League/ex League/pre League grounds we played at – only it was a message I wanted to preview - and it told me to log in again.)

That would be a bug for Gary Ekins of the Kingstonian parish to look at for us - I'll pass it on... I know he's got a big update in the works, so hopefully that can include a fix for you!
