It should be remembered that even in the unquestionable finest era of the club, when Hendon drew at St James Park Newcastle 1-1, against one of the greatest ever Newcastle teams (they went on to the FA Cup final), that only twelve players were named for any match. The poor substitute was usually overlooked, simply because risks could not be taken. The mid-sixties may well be recalled as halcyon days, but in reality the early to mid seventies will have to go down as the peak, at least so far. Let's also remember that Reading and Orient have both been defeated in the FA Cup post the sixties. These remain as the only two victories against league opposition.
